Younger Feet
Contrary to what everyone thinks until it happens, young feet suffer a range of problems triggered off by sport, footwear and injuries.
In-Growing Toe Nails
In-growing toe nails are quite common in children due to the soft and moist nature of their skin. We try to treat most children's in-growing nails with really gentle chiropody techniques, although we sometimes do need to resort to removing part of the nail under local anaesthetic.
Veruccae
Veruccae are viruses contracted on damp surfaces such as the side of swimming pools. Children seem more prone to them than adults, but often they are much easier to treat.
‘Growing pains’ and Biomechanics
Problem biomechanics can give rise to several childhood foot and leg conditions associated with their growth. Often associated with flat feet, in-toeing or a lot of sport, sometimes children also go on to develop childhood syndromes such as Sever's, Osgood Schlatter's and Freiberg's. If your child's foot condition is painful, if s/he runs strangely, trips a lot, has achy feet, pain associated with exercise or in the mornings, you may wish to get them assessed in case it is more than just a case of growing pains.
Special Arrangements for Children
Children can be quite nervous at first, but it is really important that they gain confidence in us. We stop if they become too nervous or if they get upset. Often the same thing done a few days later without upset.
And all children under 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times. We also need written consent from their parent or guardian to undertake verrucca treatments, nail surgery or video gait analysis.
